The prostate gland is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its principle job is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can impede urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results could signify disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
