This page is about less rigid erections and prostate cancer
The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's most important function is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate is a bit larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe cases completely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgery.
In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
