The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its principle function is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised test results may indicate a disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been noted that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
