The prostate is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's leading role is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is part of seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate is a little bit larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can impede the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Elevated pSA blood results can signify disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been uncovered that medicines including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
