The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its overriding function is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital part of semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is somewhat greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results could signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noticed that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
