The prostate gland is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's most paramount role is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy man's prostate gland is a bit bigger than a walnut. In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Raised test results can suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been discovered that medicines including Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
