The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most significant role is to produce and store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results may signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
