The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its predominant function is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate gland is slightly bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can jam up the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised test results might indicate a disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
