The prostate is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's chief role is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen. A normal man's prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can occlude urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results can highly suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been uncovered that medicines like Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual purposes.
