The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's main job is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or operations.
In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Elevated pSA blood results may be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been observed that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
