The prostate gland is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most paramount job is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human's prostate is a little bit larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
