This page is about medications that cause enlarged prostate

The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's chief role is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is an important part of semen. A normal individual's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated test results may highly suggest disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
