The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's overriding function is to produce and store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results might signify disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been observed that drugs like Docetaxel are effective in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
