The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's primary function is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen. A normal man's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. In men who are elderly, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can signal disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of cancer.
