The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its leading role is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a shelled walnut. Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated pSA blood results could signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
