The prostate gland is part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's predominant role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated test results could highly suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been uncovered that medicines such as Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
