The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount function is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or operations.
In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicines or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised pSA blood results may signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.
Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
