The prostate is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's leading role is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe instances totally impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results could signal disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual purposes.
