The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its main role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human's prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Raised test results could be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been noted that medications including Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
