The prostate is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's most significant job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is part of semen. A normal man's prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might indicate a disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been found that medicines like Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
