The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's overriding job is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate is a bit bigger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Raised blood PSA results may signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been observed that drugs including Docetaxel are useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
