The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy individual's prostate is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes elderly males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results may highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
