The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's chief function is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can occlude urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised test results could be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly sexual purposes.
