The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's main role is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen. A healthy individual's prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results may highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel may be effective in treating cancer.

Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
