The prostate is part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its most important role is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is a bit larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
