The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's leading job is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results could signal disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs like Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
