The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's overriding function is to produce and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised test results might suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel are effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
