This site is about pathophysiology benign prostatic hypertrophy

The prostate gland is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's primary function is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased man's prostate is somewhat bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results can indicate a disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been noted that medications like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
