The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's paramount job is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate gland is somewhat larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results can highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been detected that medicines such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.
