The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most paramount role is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased human's prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised pSA blood results might suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
