The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's most important role is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can obstruct urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results could signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noticed that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
