The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most significant job is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect elderly males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised blood PSA results might suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
