The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's leading job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human's prostate gland is somewhat larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or operations.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
