The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle role is to produce and store a clear liquid that is part of seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can jam up the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel are effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
