The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its chief function is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a walnut. Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results could indicate a disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations.
