The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most paramount function is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate is somewhat larger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or operations.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised pSA blood results may be an indicator of disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
