The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's leading role is to produce and store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal man's prostate is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results may signal disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
