The prostate is part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's paramount role is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated pSA blood results can highly suggest disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
