The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most significant function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human's prostate is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results might be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been observed that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
