The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's predominant function is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of semen. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results may be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been uncovered that medications like Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
