The prostate gland is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most significant function is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate gland is slightly bigger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results could indicate a disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel could be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
