The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's overriding job is to secrete and store a clear liquid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate gland is a bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can obstruct urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even operations.
In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
