The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's main job is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Raised pSA blood results might signify disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been detected that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual fulfillment.
