The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its paramount role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results could signal disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
