The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its paramount role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.
Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.
In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results could signal disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
