The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most paramount job is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or operations.

In older men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results may be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been discovered that drugs like Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
