The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's chief role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased man's prostate is somewhat heftier in size than a walnut. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been detected that medicines like Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.
