The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's principle job is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy individual's prostate gland is a little bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medications or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may signal disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
