The prostate is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most significant job is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is slightly bigger than a walnut. Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to strike elderly men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results could suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noted that medications including Docetaxel can be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
