The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its predominant role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of semen. A sound human prostate is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.
Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.
In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results may be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel could be effective in treating cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
