The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's main function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy individual's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised blood PSA results can indicate a disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been observed that drugs like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
